Nothing listed under that yet. The trade guides below still apply — they tell you what to ask for when there is no one to point you at.
Every trade, and what can be checked
A register exists for some trades and not others. Each guide says which one applies, how to search it in under a minute, and what to ask for when there is nothing to look up.

Partly regulatedWhat the badges mean
They say how much you can verify before you hire, not how good anyone is — a decorator with no register may well be the best in Horsforth.
- Required by law
- Working without registration is a criminal offence. The strongest check there is.
- Government-authorised scheme
- Registration lets them self-certify that work meets the Building Regulations.
- Partly regulated
- Part of the job is regulated and part is not. Check the regulated part.
- No register exists
- No licence, no register, no mandatory qualification. Judge the work and the paperwork.
Three things that catch people out
Nobody can verify a DBS check for you. There is no public register, and a directory has no legal entitlement to look one up. Any site telling you a tutor or carer is "DBS verified" means the person said so. Ask to see the certificate yourself.
If your waste is fly-tipped, you can be prosecuted. Not just whoever dumped it. The duty to check that whoever takes your rubbish is a registered waste carrier sits with you, and the register is free to search.
Trade association membership is usually paid marketing. Some schemes assess competence and some simply take a subscription. The pages here say which is which for each trade, and the difference matters more than the badge.
