Listed because each one could be traced to a primary source on the date shown. That is a check on who they are, not a recommendation — it says nothing about the quality of anyone's work. Use the questions below before you hire.

Where you stand

What the rules say

There is no licence to be a builder. What is regulated is the work: building control approval for structural changes, and the gas, electrical and window elements, each with their own scheme.

How to check

Check the company exists and is active on Companies House — look at how long it has traded, whether accounts are overdue, and whether it is close to being struck off. Check waste carrier registration if they are removing rubble. Then check the specialists separately: Gas Safe for the boiler, the electrical register for the wiring.

What to ask for

Ask who is handling building control, and get it in writing. Ask which of the trades they subcontract and check those separately.

Worth knowing. A brand-new company with a director who has had several dissolved companies is a pattern worth noticing. Companies House shows this for free.
