Listed because each one could be traced to a primary source on the date shown. That is a check on who they are, not a recommendation — it says nothing about the quality of anyone's work. Use the questions below before you hire.

Where you stand

What the rules say

Unlike gas, an unregistered electrician can legally do the work. The difference is paperwork: registered electricians can self-certify that notifiable work meets the Building Regulations. An unregistered one has to notify Building Control and pay for an inspection — and if that does not happen, you have no certificate.

How to check

Search the national register by postcode. It covers every government-authorised scheme, so you do not need to know whether someone is with NICEIC, NAPIT or another body.

What to ask for

For notifiable work — a new circuit, a consumer unit, anything in a bathroom or outdoors — ask who is certifying it and make sure you receive the certificate when the job is done. You will need it when you sell.

Worth knowing. NICEIC's own website has become a quote-request form rather than a register check. Use the national register above instead.
